The presentation offers a preliminary study of the linguistic and methodological features of the work Početnica i perva štanka za katoličanske hervatske škole šopronske, mošonske i železanske krajine I. i II. razreda (“Primer and First Reader for Catholic Croatian Schools of the Sopron, Moson and Željezno Regions, Grades I and II”), published in Sopron in 1920. The analysis demonstrates that this primer, intended for Croatian minority schools in Western Hungary, continues the tradition of Croatian monolingual primers from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly in its use of the syllabic method for teaching reading and writing and its strong emphasis on the development of writing skills.
Special attention is given to orthographic features, the sequence of letter instruction, visual supports, handwriting guidelines, typographic solutions, and the textual content of the primer, as well as to the role of illustrations in the process of early literacy acquisition. The study further shows that, in addition to its educational function, the primer also played an important cultural and identity-building role in preserving the Croatian language and national consciousness among the Burgenland Croats following the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.
The paper confirms that Početnica i perva štanka represents a valuable example of the continuity of the Croatian primer tradition and constitutes a significant contribution to the history of Croatian minority education and culture outside the borders of the Croatian homeland.
